How Can I Help My Child with Anxiety? Part 1: Build a Secure Relationship

Part 1 – Building secure and healthy relationships

Building secure healthy relationships with children will build their confidence and help to reduce anxiety.

We have known this for decades. It’s a well-known fact but we often miss it in our quest to find solutions to the growing epidemic of childhood anxiety.

What to do:

Building a secure relationship sounds simple but in reality it’s not always. The key ingredient is investing time and attention with the child even if this only starts out as 30 minutes a week. The other ingredient is getting the child to choose what you spend this time doing.

It’s an opportunity for you to have fun together. It could be as simple as jumping on the trampoline together, playing Lego or reading a book.

This time allows you to give your child your full attention, your focus is on them and having fun together. You’ll make them feel like the most important person in the world during that time.

Taking the time to build a positive and secure relationship with your child will have a wonderful impact on their overall wellbeing and as I said at the start, building secure relationships builds confidence and this helps to reduce anxiety.
