Supporting Fostered and
Adopted Children’s Social,
Emotional and Mental Wellbeing

"We have started using DESTY within the Virtual School in Knowsley and the feedback in relation to this as an effective child friendly tool and activity has been excellent. The DESTY programme is a well-structured programme that is helping children to identify and explore feelings and make sense of their world, which has often been complex. We are using with Learning Mentors, foster carers and Virtual School staff, all of who have valued the professional development and the opportunity to use the programme and see an impact in the engagement and understanding of the children they are working with."

Debbie Williams, Virtual School Head Teacher, Knowsley Virtual School

Around the Child

We provide skills training to the network of adults around a child, including parents of PLAC, which empowers them to develop secure attachments with children and to build children’s self-confidence and emotional resilience.

Key Adult

DESTY provides advanced skills training to a key adult in a child’s life who becomes a Certified DESTY Mentor that implements the individualised DESTY Island online Programme with a child to develop their overall wellbeing.

Premium Plus

The DESTY Island Software programme is a targeted, evidence-based intervention which is an ideal fit for the effective use of PPP funding. The programme is also suited to educators providing alternative education provisions to children-in-care.

How Does DESTY Work? We do the Work for You!

  1. The Virtual School Team identify parents, carers and educators that will participate in the DESTY Training Courses and Team DESTY take it from here;
  2. Team DESTY contact participants to co-ordinate the training and to provide on-going support;
  3. Team DESTY provide on-going updates on participant progress and follow-ups to the Virtual School Team.

Virtual Schools We Work With

Our pilot study highlighted that 80% of children who used the DESTY® Island Programme improved their emotional wellbeing.

"This course offers a valuable opportunity for the TEAM around a looked after child of all ages to revisit some very key strategies in unlocking the voice of the child. I would welcome the opportunity for all those involved in the care of our children to be offered this opportunity."
Jane Porter, Chair Surrey Fostering Association, UK

"For children in care, DESTY has the potential to be a significant tool in helping Children and Foster families to stay together, to build resilience together and promote lasting positive relationships. "
Leanne McCann, Foster Care Educator, Wigan, UK

Developing Children’s Emotional Resilience

Designed and facilitated by educational psychologist and Founder of DESTY, Stephanie O’Malley, this online skills development course empowers the key people connected to the network around a child to understand the impact of attachment and trauma on a child. It also aims to equip them with the tools and strategies to develop secure attachments and to support a child who has experienced adverse life experiences.

This course also includes a set of DESTY Feeling Cards so participants can start their work as soon as they embark on the course.

This online course can be completed in a participant’s own time and at their own pace.

Hear from our Certified DESTY Mentors:

"DESTY Mentor Training is a must for those who are educators or work with children. I have already seen an enormous difference in my foster child and how he expresses himself, in his communication, vocabulary and his confidence. We are thoroughly enjoying working together on the DESTY Island, it is helping him to understand his feelings, emotions and thoughts and to know it's OK to be upset or angry. We are having fun and learning."

MIKEALA - Foster Carer, Surrey

"The DESTY mentor training has been such a valuable experience. It has made me really look at myself as a mentor. It has given me a much greater understanding of why children can experience difficulties in self-regulating, and as a result led to significant changes in the way I support children at this time. The DESTY training has given me is the confidence to stop, take time and think carefully before I react, and the desire to share this strategy with children."

CLAIRE - SENCO, Hampshire

"This course has covered emotions and feelings that are vital in caring for children in Foster Care. It provides you with the information, knowledge and learning which can be used over and over again. The online help means you have got support whenever you need it. I have already starting using some of the guides in my work place and over time this will have a big impact on the day to day life of the children."

LISA - Foster Carer, Birmingham
